Book Symposium on Michael Kühler & Veselin Mitrovi (eds.): Theories of the Self and Autonomy in Medical Ethics, The International Library of Bioethics 83, Cham: Springer, 2020

Abstract: The volume Theories of the Self and Autonomy in Medical Ethics engages in a critical discussion on how to respect and promote patients? autonomy in difficult cases such as palliative care and end-of-life decisions. These cases pose specific epistemic, normative, and practical problems, and the volume's contributions elucidate the connection between the practical implications of the theoretical debate on respecting autonomy, on the one hand, and specific questions and challenges that arise in medical practice, on the other hand. Given that the idea of personal autonomy includes the notion of authenticity as one of its core components, the volume explicitly includes discussions on underlying theories of the self. In doing so, it brings together original contributions and novel insights for "applied" scenarios based on interdisciplinary collaboration between German and Serbian scholars from philosophy, sociology, and law. It is of benefit to anyone cherishing autonomy in medical ethics and medical practice. The volume has recently been published (2020) with Springer as number 83 of "The International Library of Bioethics" series.

The book symposium is intended to engage in further discussion on topics of the volume and ideally to encourage further international and interdisciplinary collaboration. It features comments by a variety of esteemed colleagues on selected chapters, brief replies by the respective chapter authors, and time for joint discussion. It also includes a presentation by Christopher Wilby from Springer on their publication opportunities. After the academic part, there will be an opportunity for an informal online get-together on the platform Wonder.me.
