The growing generation of solid waste by our modern society causes enormous impacts in different sectors of society. These impacts represent a big challenge to governments worldwide which are looking for sustainable solutions. The response to this demand is given in different ways, according to given conditions, however all of them address the alleviation of negative impacts of waste generation. In this frame, waste treatment technologies address the processing of waste to gain second-raw materials to re- introduce them into production chains, as well as the preparation of waste material for energy recovery purposes. The speech presents at glance the current practices for energy recovery from waste and presents in more detail the Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) technologies, illustrated with a case study.
