Neutronics support for the design of DEMO breeding blankets and a dedicated nuclear testing facility

Montag, 05. Februar 2024, 11:00-12:00
KIT Campus Nord, INR, Bau 521, 2. OG, Raum 302

Research and development of the Demonstration Power Plant (DEMO) breeder blanket (BB) have been undertaken in recent years based on predefined DEMO neutronics requirements. To meet all these requirements, various concepts for BBs are currently being researched and developed, and comprehensive neutronics processes and results are conducted to support the design. For one of these design concepts, the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) concept developed at KIT, results and conclusions from most recent neutronics analysis are presented. As the continuous design development of the BB progresses, the need for comprehensive testing is imminent, as appropriate validation and qualification are required. In addition to the BB nuclear design qualification efforts within the ITER Test Blanket Module (TBM) and prospective medium flux irradiation modules at IFMIF-DONES, support for the newly proposed Volumetric Neutron Source (VNS) design is being provided through neutronics analysis. The talk will present preliminary nuclear shielding analyses to assess the technical feasibility of a VNS concept of the tokamak-type Fusion Technology Unique Research Device (FUTURE).
