Following the successful review of Research Training Group (RTG) 2561 "MatCom-ComMat: Materials Compounds from Composite Materials" in February, the DFG has now decided to extend it. The second funding period will begin on October 1, 2024 and run until March 31, 2029. A budget of more than 4 million euros was granted for this period.

"In the Research Training Group, we develop the foundations for a completely new generation of high-performance materials that can reduce the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of combustion engines in the future," explains the spokesperson, Professor Martin Heilmaier from the Institute for Applied Materials at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

The scope of the RTG relates to the development, characterization and modelling of novel, revolutionary multi-phase composite systems capable of withstanding temperatures substantially beyond 1 300 °C and harsh environmental conditions as far as mechanical behaviour, environmental resistance and durability are concerned.

In addition to KIT, the Technical University of Darmstadt and the DECHEMA Research Institute Frankfurt are also involved in the research training group. While still in the first funding period, the second cohort of doctoral students began their work in 2023. The third doctoral cohort of the Research Training Group will start in 2026.
