People at KIT – Unique Together
The diversity at KIT is rooted in the history of its predecessor institutions. The university sphere, whose origins date back to 1825, represents a wide range of disciplines and knowledge, while the Helmholtz sphere has traditionally focused on the major and pressing challenges facing society, science, and industry. The 2006 merger of the Research Center Karlsruhe and the University of Karlsruhe to form KIT created an institution that is truly unique within the German research and education landscape.
Around 10,000 people work together here to generate new knowledge, applications, and solutions that address humanity’s global challenges through pioneering contributions. More than 20,000 students are preparing for responsible roles in society, industry, and science. People from around 120 countries study and work at KIT. As “The Research University in the Helmholtz Association”, KIT is unique in both its structure and disciplinary breadth. The people who make up the KIT community are just as unique —and just as diverse.
