Research Groups and Networks

international scientists in a laboratory

As the only University of Excellence with a national large-scale research sector in Germany, KIT pursues interdisciplinary collaboration in a special way. Joint research into complex relevant issues is conducted by research groups across disciplines in natural sciences, engineering, economics, the humanities, and social sciences. Research networks pool several individual projects to reach common goals and results. Research networks mostly are planned for medium terms. Work is carried out at several locations. Scientists develop the basis for making decisions and sustainable and concrete solutions for mastering the challenges facing our society and the environment.

Collaborative Research Centers (CRC) are of longer-term character. They are scheduled for durations from four to twelve years. Within the framework of CRC, scientists, sometimes from several universities, pursue an interdisciplinary research program.
