Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and KIT Freundeskreis und Fördergesellschaft e.V. (KFG) will award this year’s Heinrich Hertz Guest Professorship to Dr. Joachim Nagel. Nagel, who was born in Karlsruhe and studied at the University of Karlsruhe, has been President of the Deutsche Bundesbank since 2022. On Thursday, October 5, 2023, 17.00 hrs, he will speak about the role of the euro for citizens, politics, and the Central Bank at Audimax, Campus South (building 30.95, Straße am Forum 1, 76131 Karlsruhe). In addition, Nagel will give a seminar for students of KIT.

In his public presentation “Europa und sein Euro – Fit für die Zukunft?“ (Europe and its euro – fit for the future?), Joachim Nagel will address the following questions among others: Where is Europe heading today? Which role does the euro play? And what does this mean for citizens, politics, and the Central Bank? 25 years ago, in April 1998, German parliament agreed to introduce the euro. Since January 1, 2002, the joint currency has facilitated travels and trade in Europe and stabilized prizes for more than two decades in spite of the financial crisis, sovereign debt crisis, and pandemic. Meanwhile, new priorities have started to determine European politics: High inflation, climate crisis, and geopolitical challenges. Against this background, it is important to focus on Europe and the euro from both political and economic perspectives.
On October 5, 2023, Joachim Nagel will also teach the seminar “Wirtschaftsbeobachtung auf höherer Frequenz“ (observation of economy at higher frequency) for students of KIT.
