Eleven subjects of KIT are found in the list of the top 200 universities worldwide. In seven subjects, namely, informatics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, physics, chemistry, and materials sciences, KIT is ranked in the top 50 of the world. This is obvious from the recently published QS World University Rankings by Subject 2013. The ranking is based on the criteria of academic reputation, reputation among employers, frequency of citations in scientific publications, and the Hirsch index, an indicator of research achievements of scientists.
In total, 2858 universities were evaluated for the worldwide ranking published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds. 678 of these universities made it into the list of the best. KIT improved compared to the past year and reached the top 50 of the world in seven disciplines. In German comparison, this corresponds to four third places and one second place in chemical engineering. Three times, KIT is found to be the best German university, i.e. in civil engineering, materials sciences, and – neck-and-neck with TU Munich – informatics.
As regards the engineering and technology subjects, KIT informatics is ranked in 40th position worldwide in 2013. Chemical engineering reaches place 42, civil engineering place 33, electrical engineering is ranked in the group 51 – 100, mechanical engineering reaches position 46.
As regards the natural sciences, KIT reaches place 36 in chemistry, group 101 – 150 for geosciences, place 39 for materials sciences, group 101 – 150 in mathematics, and place 23 in physics.
In social sciences and management, KIT economics are ranked in the group 151 – 200. Compared to 2012, KIT improved in eight subjects.
In comparison with other German universities, KIT improved by at least one place in every technical or scientific subject, except for civil engineering, where KIT was the best German university in 2012 already.
Since 2010, QS has been publishing an own ranking that is largely based on reputation indicators. Before, QS co-edited the THES ranking. Every year in autumn, a total ranking is published. This year, the ranking by subject is published for the third time.
