Founded in January 2011 by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (Germany’s largest scientific organization) and has evolved into a partnership of several distinguished organizations: the University of Ulm, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW).

Research of the Helmholtz Institute Ulm focuses on investigating and developing next-generation und future-use battery technologies. In the area of battery research HIU bundles efficiently the unique expertise of its four partner organizations. Emphasizing both fundamental and applied research, the institute makes an essential contribution to the larger problem of developing clean energy sources with renewable energy
