Ulrich Husemann Appointed Scientific Director for Particle Physics at DESY
Professor Ulrich Husemann, previously affiliated with the Institute for Experimental Particle Physics at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), has been appointed Scientific Director for Particle Physics at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, effective November 1, 2025. A professorship at the University of Hamburg associated with this new position is currently being arranged.
“KIT is losing a versatile and well-connected scientist in Ulrich Husemann,” said Professor Oliver Kraft, Vice President Academic Affairs at KIT. “On behalf of KIT, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for his outstanding commitment and wish him all the best in his new role at DESY. We will certainly continue to collaborate in many areas of particle physics.”
Ulrich Husemann’s scientific work at KIT focused primarily on the development and construction of particle detectors for the CMS experiment, one of the four major experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European particle physics laboratory CERN in Geneva. He also worked on the application of detector technologies to radiation therapy.
Ulrich Husemann served as a member of the KIT Senate and several steering committees at KIT. He is active in national and international particle physics committees and was Chair of the BMBF Review Panel “Particle” from 2021 to 2024. In teaching, Ulrich Husemann advocated for the reform of the Bachelor’s program in Physics. In 2018, he received the Faculty Teaching Award from the KIT Department of Physics.
DESY, like KIT, is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers.
