KIT Once Again Among the International Leaders in the Latest Subject Ranking
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is once again among the international leaders in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025. It performs particularly well in the subjects Energy Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and the newly introduced subject Robotics Science & Engineering, where it ranks 23rd, 37th, and 45th worldwide. KIT is also among the top 100 universities globally in Atmospheric Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, and Nanoscience & Nanotechnology.
Several First-place Positions in the National Ranking
In the national comparison, KIT ranks first in Atmospheric Science, Energy Science & Engineering, and Metallurgical Engineering. In four additional subjects – Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Nanoscience & Nanotechnology – it shares the top position with other German universities.
Compared to the previous year, KIT has improved in four subjects. Its strong performance in the indicators World Class Output and High Quality Research highlights the high quality of its scientific work. Publications in leading journals and international awards for researchers play a key role. For example, the High Quality Research indicator considers publications in the top 25 percent of journals in a given field, illustrating the continuous excellence of research at KIT.
GRAS 2025 is one of the most comprehensive international subject rankings. It evaluates 57 disciplines across five academic fields. Around 2,000 universities from 92 countries meet the criteria for at least one subject ranking. Newly added subjects include Robotics Science & Engineering and Artificial Intelligence.
