On Saturday, July 02, KIT will organize an Open Day on its new Campus East (former Mackensen barracks) at Rintheimer Querallee 2: From 12 to 20 hrs, visitors will be given the opportunity to familiarize with the numerous research activities relating to “Future Mobility”. Apart from guided tours, driving demonstrations, popular scientific lectures, experiments to take part in, and an entertaining program for children, visitors may enjoy an entertainment program with a stage show, two live bands, and delicious meals. For representatives of the media, press tours will be organized.

This year, the Open Day will focus on mobility, from fuel production to new battery materials to innovations relating vehicles to the development of new mobility concepts. More than 80 KIT actors, partners, and sponsors will present exhibitions, make demonstrations or explain their work using exhibits. More than 40 test and demonstration vehicles will be shown. In addition, the nanoTruck of the Federal Ministry of Research, a mobile exhibition and communication center for the live presentation of nanotechnology on two levels, will come.
Mobility in the sense of “research work on four wheels” will be demonstrated on the test area of the new campus. At 13.00, 15.00, and 17.00 hrs, researchers will present their projects in 15 driving pressentations. These projects will be autonomous vehicles without any drivers, electric and hybrid vehicles, intelligent vehicles with assistance systems, and the spectacular HeliGraphix model helicopter show.

Popular scientific lectures will explain complex issues in a simple way. In 13 lectures of half an hour each, KIT scientists will highlight different aspects of traffic, production engineering, and infrastructure. Among others, KIT Vice President Dr. Peter Fritz will answer the question: “Where does the Electricity for Electromobility Come from?”.
KIT service units will also present themselves on the Open Day. The Medical Services Unit, for instance, will offer a visual test that is needed for the driving license examination. The Human Resources Service Unit will make visitors experience what correct management is. Trainees will talk about training at KIT and those who wish to twitter or to post on facebook will be instructed at the tent of the Public Relations and Marketing Service Unit. For those who are mobile on the internet, it will be worthwhile to look on the facebook pages of KIT. Here, join-in actions with prizes will be announced, interesting events will be highlighted, and latest images or videos will be downloaded. KIT actors will also twitter their experience
Again, many activities for children are planned. During a researchers’ rally, children and adolescents may discover science and engineering at KIT. Most institutes and institutions will make experiments and demonstrations for children in particular. A central children’s program will be offered at the “Kinderreich”.
Entertainment Program
On the stage, the comedians Picco-Bello will perform their program “Die schrägen Professoren”. Together with its media partner “Die Neue Welle“, KIT has organized an interesting musical program. The Open Day will end with the soul band “Fifty/Fifty” and the
“Curbside Prophets”, four boys from Karlsruhe making funk-rock-reggae-surf music and giving their audience a Caribbean feeling.

The KIT Mobility Systems Center and the Press Office will offer two guided tours for journalists: At 14.30 hrs and at 16.00 hrs, scientists will inform about mobility research at KIT and present the test rigs on Campus East. The Open Day is one of 125 program elements of the 2011 Automobile Summer of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. It is one of the winners of the competition of ideas for the Automobile Summer organized by the Baden-Wuerttemberg Minister for Economics.
The Mobility Systems Center pools KIT activities relating to vehicle technology. Presently, 40 KIT institutes with about 800 employees are working on methodological and technical fundamentals for tomorrow’s vehicles. It is their objective to develop energy-efficient, low-emission, and safe vehicles and mobility concepts. The researchers also consider the complex interactions of vehicle, driver, traffic, and society.
