KIT Adopts Institutional AI Strategy
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming science, higher education, and the workplace. It opens up new opportunities and possibilities while raising questions about transparency, data protection, responsible action, and sustainable AI. With an institutional AI strategy, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) outlines its vision for the future use of artificial intelligence. The strategy also defines objectives and guiding principles for its responsible use and further development in research, teaching, transfer, and administration. At the same time, it describes the challenges associated with the use of AI.
“Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing the way we conduct research, teach, learn, and work. With its AI strategy, KIT articulates its ambition to actively shape this development and to make greater, yet responsible, use of the opportunities offered by the technology,” says Professor Kora Kristof, Vice President Digitalization and Sustainability at KIT.
AI in Research, Study, and Work
Artificial intelligence is already being used across many areas at KIT. Researchers employ AI to analyze large volumes of data and generate new insights. New learning and teaching formats are emerging in study programs and teaching. AI applications are also increasingly being adopted in service and administrative areas.
At the same time, KIT has developed guidelines for generative AI, established training opportunities, and expanded access to modern AI tools, including an AI toolbox available to employees and students.
In addition, KIT is investing in its own digital infrastructure, such as the new 17 million euros HoreKa 2 supercomputer, to ensure access to powerful and data-sovereign computing resources for research and AI applications.
Guidance for the Future
Through its strategy, KIT defines shared objectives for the institution-wide use of AI. The aim is to unlock the technology’s considerable potential while ensuring that data sovereignty, transparency, sustainability, and regulatory requirements are taken into account from the outset.
The strategy was developed through a KIT-wide participatory process.
