Successful Start: KIT at the Schlosslichtspiele
With a kick-off event and the premiere of the film “Science for Impact” at Karlsruhe’s Palace, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) opened the Schlosslichtspiele Light Festival yesterday, August 14, 2025. This year's theme, “The Shining Lights of Science,” was chosen to celebrate KIT's 200th anniversary and shapes the program until September 14.
During the opening event, Professor Thomas Hirth, Vice President Transfer and International Affairs at KIT and responsible for the anniversary year, thanked the city for choosing the motto: “Especially in times when there is so much discussion about the freedom of science, it is a strong sign that Karlsruhe is giving science such a stage.”
Science meets art
In front of the baroque palace facade, thousands of people watched the ten-minute projection, which presented the diversity of science at KIT in an artistic form. The Spanish artist group Los Romeras staged the 170-meter-long and 17-meter-high facade: windows became water cascades, bubbles formed DNA strands, and trains raced out of the palace facade.
The contribution visualizes research from the following KIT centers, which financed it: Energy, Climate and Environment; Information · Systems · Technologies; Elementary Particle and Astroparticle Physics; Health Technologies; Materials in Technology and Life Sciences; Mobility Systems; and Humans and Technology.
The Schlosslichtspiele will take place every evening until September 14, regardless of the weather. The artists present works on the theme of science and its influence on the physical and digital world.
