Digitization leads to profound changes in industry and society. Successful design of sustainable digital solutions requires competences in the areas of informatics, economics, and law. These qualifications for the digital worlds of work and life are imparted by the Information Systems Program of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It builds on a long-standing, interdisciplinary teaching tradition, has now been approved by the State Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts (MWK), and will be offered by KIT in the 2019/20 winter semester for the first time.
“Digital services and business models are presently developing at high speed. Startups look for their niches, established companies have to reorganize. That is why experts for digital transformation are in very high demand,” says Professor Alexander Mädche, Dean of Studies of the KIT Department of Economics and Management. “Studies of information systems at KIT will impart to our students the qualification required to design this change and to generate benefit for the society,” adds Professor Sebastian Abeck of the KIT Department of Informatics.
Information Systems: Experts Are in Great Demand
Information systems experts are presently needed by all branches. They work at the interface between business perspective and potentials of information technologies. Studies of information systems represent an excellent basis for handling challenging tasks in areas like the development of software and digital services, consulting, data analysis or at one’s own business. The Program makes the students fit for a professional future at startups, medium-sized enterprises, and big companies.
KIT’s new Studies Program of Information Systems combines science and practice of digitization. It builds on the long tradition of the discontinued Information Technologies Program of the KIT Departments of Economics and Informatics.
Interdisciplinary, International, and Practice-oriented
Both KIT departments involved in the Program have a remarkable history and can be found in top positions of the corresponding rankings. The KIT Department of Informatics was the first department of this type in Germany and covers a very broad range of topics. The KIT Department of Economics and Management is known for its interdisciplinary research and teaching at the interface of economics, mathematics, informatics, and engineering.
Apart from basics in informatics, economics, and law, the new Program attaches crucial importance to practice-oriented problem solution competences, in line with KIT’s concept of research-oriented teaching. Within a comprehensive team project, bachelor’s students develop an executable application software using latest methods and tools. Based on this knowledge, master’s students can choose from a number of elective modules for individual specialization in artificial intelligence, IT security, or marketing and logistics, for example.
A Perfect Combination
Studies of Information Systems at KIT are characterized by real interdisciplinarity, individuality, internationality, and integration of digitization science and practice. Organized exchange programs, language courses, courses in English, and funded internships abroad enable students to acquire international experience in the bachelor’s phase already. KIT is known for its close collaboration with renowned national and international commercial and industrial enterprises. The Information Systems Network of Partners specially established for the Program is aimed at a close interconnection of science and practice during studies already.
