KIT Reaches Top Results in “Shanghai“ Ranking

KIT among the 100 Best Universities Worldwide in 13 Subjects – Strong in Engineering Sciences

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) scores excellently in the current subject ranking of ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities). In engineering sciences alone, KIT ranks among the top 100 with ten subjects, in natural sciences with three subjects. Meteorology and energy sciences are two of the subjects where KIT is among the best German universities. The ARWU, also known as “Shanghai” ranking, evaluates research indicators, such as the number of published scientific articles.

In 13 subjects altogether, KIT is among the best 100 universities in the world. Of these, three are in the top 50: meteorology (place 16), metallurgical engineering (place 25), and energy sciences (place 28). In engineering sciences, also the subjects of informatics, remote sensing, materials science, nanotechnology, water resources, mechanical engineering, instruments technology, and biotechnology are ranked in the top 100. These are complemented by physics and chemistry from the natural sciences field.

Meteorology and energy sciences and, together with other universities in the same ranking group, chemistry, instruments technology, and biotechnology are the subjects where KIT is ranked among the very best in Germany. In informatics, materials science, and metallurgical engineering, KIT finishes second of all German universities. In physics, nanotechnology, and water resources, KIT is in the same ranking group with other universities.

Since 2009, the ARWU ranking has been published once every year by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. Ranking is based on five differently weighted metrics: the number of published scientific articles per subject, citations, international co-publications, publications in top international scientific journals as well as the number of research award winners among the scientific staff.
