In close partnership with society, KIT develops solutions for urgent challenges – from climate change, energy transition and sustainable use of natural resources to artificial intelligence, sovereignty and an aging population. To address these ‘Grand Challenges’, we pursue a topic-oriented approach, primarily embodied within our KIT Centers. They bring together various disciplines – also bridging engineering and the natural sciences on one side, and the social sciences and humanities on the other. This fosters integrated research that is socially relevant and has lasting impact.

Aligned with the thematic emphasis of our KIT Centers, these efforts culminate in our scientific beacons: our Research Foci – internationally competitive areas of excellence – and Emerging Fields – promising research areas currently under development. They open up new pathways for scientific breakthroughs, technological innovation, and practical solutions.
