Six KIT Subjects in the Top 50 of the World

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2014 – Civil Engineering in First Place in Germany

Eleven subjects of KIT are found in the list of the top 200 univer-sities worldwide. In six subjects, namely, civil engineering, in-formatics, materials sciences, chemical engineering, physics, and chemistry – KIT is ranked in the top 50 of the world. This is obvious from the recently published QS World University Ranking by Subject 2014. The ranking is based on the criteria of academic reputation, reputation among employers, frequency of citations in scientific publications, and the Hirsch index, an indicator of research achievements of scientists.

 

In total 3002 universities were evaluated for the worldwide ranking published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds. 685 of these universities made it into the list of the best. KIT has reached the top 50 of the world in six disciplines. In German comparison, KIT’s civil engineering is ranked in first place ahead of TU München and the University of Stuttgart. In informatics, materials sciences, and chemical engineer-ing, KIT is ranked in second position, in physics and chemistry in third position. KIT also is among the best ten universities in Germany in electrical engineering, mathematics, and mechanical engineering.

 

As regards the engineering and technology subjects, KIT is ranked in 40th position worldwide in civil engineering and informatics. Chemical engineering reaches place 48, mechanical and electrical engineering are ranked in the group 51-100.

 

As regards the natural sciences, KIT reaches place 24 in physics, place 46 in chemistry and materials sciences, and group 51-100 in mathematics.

 

In social sciences and management, KIT’s geosciences are ranked in the group 101-150 and KIT economics in the group 151-200.

 

Since 2010, QS has been publishing an own ranking that is largely based on reputation indicators. Every autumn, a total ranking is pub-lished. The ranking by subject is published for the third time in 2014.
