Competence Field "Geosphere and Risk Management"

The geosphere is a critical component for many KIT research fields: Sustainable water, air and biosphere management of the future, development of alternative energies such as geothermal resources, understanding and mitigating of georisks, and linking atmospheric and climate research to the solid earth. Long-term observatories for atmospheric pattern are matched by KIT capacity for long-term earth observational systems such as the Black Forest Observatory (BFO), the mobile seismological array (KABBA) and Zugspitze/Schneefernerhaus. Risk research in KIT relies on competencies in meteorology and climate research, geosciences, physics, water resource management, remote sensing, engineering (hydraulic, wind, structural, electrical, mechanical, communication, logistics), economic engineering, decision support and sustainability analysis and emergency medicine. This competency is brought together within the Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology (CEDIM) that includes an external cooperation with the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ).
