In 2010, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) acquired third-party funding in the total amount of EUR 273.5 million. This corresponds to about EUR 876,600 per professor. This made KIT reach the first place of all German universities as far as total income and per-capita third-party funding are concerned. Acquisition of third-party funding is considered a major indicator of strength in research.
The data published recently by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany for the year of 2010 refer to KIT’s university sector exclusively and reveal an income in the amount of EUR 137 million. This made KIT’s university sector alone reach the first place in Baden-Württemberg and the fifth place in Germany in 2010. As far as third-party funding per professor is concerned, KIT’s university sector alone acquired EUR 542,900 in 2010 and reached the first place in Baden-Württemberg and third position in Germany according to the Federal Statistical Office. However, the university and Karlsruhe Research Center merged into KIT one year before in 2009 already and research and teaching activities were closely interlinked.
Complete KIT acquired third-party funding in the amount of EUR 273.5 million in 2010. With an income acquired per professor of EUR 876,600, KIT exceeded the federal average by more than a factor of 3 and reached the top in Germany. According to the data of the Federal Statistical Office, a professor at German universities and medical institutions acquired an average third-party funding of EUR 261,700 in 2010.
