On October 01, 2009, Universität Karlsruhe and Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe merged into KIT and created the preconditions for becoming one of the internationally leading institutions of studying and teaching in science and technology by pooling their capacities in research, teaching, and innovation. The merger of a research university with a large-scale research sector gives lecturers and students broad access to specific projects in fundamental and applied research. Topical research projects are, for example, already introduced at a very early state of studies and may be part of the first-cycle courses.

Jürgen Becker, who is responsible for teaching at KIT, says that “from the beginning, students can gain qualifications beyond their expert knowledge: The ability to work in a team along with intercultural skills."
