The Science and Technology of Nanosystems Program takes on the challenge of controlling and shaping materials from the atomic and molecular up to the macroscopic scale to explore their entire potential of novel functionalities. Research and development focuses on the following topics:
- quantum size effects and molecular building blocks
- new and novel functional materials beyond IC-materials
- new optical and photonic systems
Its activities cover the entire range from fundamental science to high performance technologies and integrated systems. Moreover, the program operates the Karlsruhe Nano Micro Facility (KNMF) which provides users from industry and academia open access to a dedicated set of state-of-the-art micro- and nanotechnologies. The KNMF offers a broad portfolio of key and essential high-end equipment, use of complex process chains for structuring and characterising a multitude of functional materials, components, and systems at the micro and nano scale.
