Nuclear Waste Management, Safety and Radiation Research Program

"Quench"-Versuchsanlage
Facility to investigate severe nuclear reactor accidents

The Nuclear Waste Management, Safety and Radiation Research Program studies scientific aspects of the following topics:

  • Safety of nuclear waste management.
  • Safety of nuclear reactors.
  • Radiation protection.
  • Decommissioning techniques.

The results obtained from this work are implemented in the public interest so as to ensure a high safety standard of the nuclear facilities operated in Germany in the future and compliance with highest international requirements.

Long-term maintenance and constant development of competence in nuclear engineering are required for the operation of nuclear reactors, the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, and the disposal of radioactive waste and represent tasks that are specifically pursued by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
