For the first time, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology invited the public to come to an Open Day on September 25, 2010. On Campus North, institutes, infrastructure facilities, and partner institutions presented their work. About 80 sites to visit offered their guests a variety of interesting looks behind the scenes of the largest German science institution. The program also included popular science presentations and entertainment. About one third of the participating institutes came from the KIT Campus South. The Open Day met with high interest. KIT wel-comed more than 45,000 visitors.

Under the heading “Find out what is behind it all!”, KIT presented its science and engineering highlights on Campus North. Visitors were invited to look behind the scenes of large research facilities on this day. More than 80 offers to join in and find out, exhibitions, and presentations were included in the program. One third of the participating institutes came from the KIT Campus South. They presented their work together with their colleagues from Campus North.

In the 2010 Science Year, “The Future of Energy” also was in the focus of the KIT Open Day. The program was complemented by exciting experiments and presentations in all other KIT research areas, i.e. Climate and Environment, Nano and Micro Technologies, Elementary Particle and Astroparticle Physics, COMMputation - Computing and Communication, Mobility, Optics and Photonics, and Interactions between Humans and Technology.

The Open Day was part of the Germany-wide Day of Energy and the Baden-Württemberg Day of Energy. In addition, KIT was granted an award as one of the places in the “Land of Ideas”, an initiative under the auspices of the Federal President.

Being “The Research University in the Helmholtz Association”, KIT creates and imparts knowledge for the society and the environment. It is the objective to make significant contributions to the global challenges in the fields of energy, mobility, and information. For this, about 9,800 employees cooperate in a broad range of disciplines in natural sciences, engineering sciences, economics, and the humanities and social sciences. KIT prepares its 22,300 students for responsible tasks in society, industry, and science by offering research-based study programs. Innovation efforts at KIT build a bridge between important scientific findings and their application for the benefit of society, economic prosperity, and the preservation of our natural basis of life. KIT is one of the German universities of excellence.
