Calculation Competition

Day of Mathematics with 200 Pupils

More than 200 speedy combiners will line up for the calculation competition at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT): Pupils of forms 12 and 13 will meet on the Day of Mathematics, Saturday, March 14, from 9.30 hrs at the Hörsaal Neue Chemie (Engesserstraße 15, building No. 30.46).

47 teams from 33 schools will take part in the group competition. Between 10 and 11 o’clock, they will solve tricky mathematic exercises. The best teams will meet again in the afternoon final: In the speed competition, speed will be important to win. Clever brains may additionally take part in the single competition that starts at 11 o’clock.

Pupils who do not take part in the competitions and accompanying teachers will be given the opportunity to listen to two presentations by mathematicians at the Criegée Hörsaal (Fritz-Haber-Weg 2-6, building No. 30.41). In the morning, Junior Professor Luitgard Veraart will talk about “Shares, options, and fair prices” and give insight into financial mathematics. In the afternoon, Junior Professor Tobias Jahnke will present “Wavelets”: Wave-shaped functional components that are important to signal processing, for instance.

Finally, Professor Günter Last will inform about professions and professional chances in mathematics. The award ceremonies for the best team and the best individual competitor will follow at 15 hrs.
