The Competence Field is concerned with all aspects of light. It deals with the generation, the manipulation, the application of photons and the interaction of light and matter. It comprises basic science as well as engineering with contributions from physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, electrical and computer engineering as well as mechanical engineering. The field might be subdivided into technical optics, nonlinear and quantum optics, advanced spectroscopy, optical systems, photonic devices, nanophotonics, and materials for photonics.
