Combustion comprises utilization of any fuel for energy conversion and production of chemicals. This Competence Field includes generation of fuels from fossil and non-fossil resources, conversion of fuels in single or multiphase systems at atmospheric and elevated pressures for generation of power and heat or co-generation of power/heat/chemicals. Particularly, the focus of this field is improvement of the efficiency of combustion processes, development of new processes, application of novel fuels, minimizing impacts on environment, pyrolysis and combustion of solid fuels, Hydrogen combustion and detonations, dust explosions and Hydrogen or alternative chemicals as an energy carrier. Knowledge of fuel characterization, fuel preparation, combustion technology and on combustion modelling as well as the adaptation and development of laser diagnostics for the investigation of physical and chemical processes in combustion systems are essential for this Competence Field .
