This Competence Field addresses all R&D activities related to research on materials being in use and to research and development of novel materials. It includes the characterisation and modelling of materials from the atomistic scale to component dimensions with respect to their microstructure and their mechanical, chemical, and physical properties. In addition, it comprises all fields ranging from constitution and synthesis to processing and manufacturing, including quality assurance and reliability with respect to the potential or actual application of materials. This includes e.g. development of superconducting materials and wires and material characteristics at low temperatures.
